Tromsø - Like Scotland on Spinach
by Alan McHardy
May 2011
Whilst the rest of us were switching into summer mode Alan and Grigor decided to jet off to the very far north of Europe for some end of season ski touring.
The northern Norwergian city of Tromsø lies at 70° N - its 250km inside the Arctic circle and owing to the high latitude they dont see the sun at all from 21 November to 21 January. However, on the flip side, there is no real darkness between late April and mid-August.
Spring is a great time to visit - with ski touring possible until as late as June most years. The nearest skiing to Tromsø is on the local island of Kvaløya, but its not much further to travel by car / ferry to the nearby snow-rich Lyngen Alps.
